What is THC?

What is THC

THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that makes you drunk. But THC has other uses that include health benefits and few side effects.

You probably know THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) as the herbal element that gives you strength. But the compound THC, one of more than 400 found in marijuana, is actually more complex. What is THC and how does it work? The experts decided to keep the THC usage updated to TheStreet.

THC, also called tetrahydrocannabinol, is a compound in marijuana that is psychoactive and can make you drunk. The chemical makeup of THC, C₂₁H₃₀O₂, is very similar to its analogue, CBD, which actually combats the effects of THC.

However, THC mimics the natural chemical structure of anandamide (which is produced in the brain) and alters the function of communication. Instead of normal brain communication through neurons, THC compounds bind to neurons and alter their processes.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), THC affects things like thinking, memory, pleasure, movement, concentration, coordination, and time and sense perception. Therefore, working with heavy machinery or driving under the influence of drugs can be dangerous.

The stigma that THC brings (especially regarding marijuana use) may not be the whole story. THC actually offers several health benefits that have been shown to help treat depression, PTSD, epilepsy, and even eating disorders.

THC composition

THC has the chemical formula C₂₁H₃₀O₂, with a molecular weight of 314,464 g/mol. But it is very similar in structure and molecular weight to its CBD analogue, which weakens the effect of THC.

Use of THC

THC has a variety of uses, both medical and recreational.

Under a dozen THC can be used in dietary syrups, tincture oils, drops, medications, and topical products, including lotions and balms for anti-inflammatory processes.

THC and marijuana can also be used in animals such as dogs to relieve pain and reduce anxiety.

In addition, Marinol, a drug made with synthetic THC, is the only THC drug that is FDA-approved.

THC legality

Currently, THC (still found in marijuana) is legal in 29 states, while recreational marijuana is legal in nine states and Washington.

However, recent reports suggest that legalization could be more widespread.

In fact, the New York Department of Health released a report earlier this month stating that “the positive effects of a regulated cannabis market … outweigh any possible negative effects,” according to the New York Daily News.

However, THC (in marijuana) is becoming increasingly important in legalization discussions. His followers came from above.

“The process of legalizing and properly regulating marijuana requires serious scrutiny and improvement,” Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Westchester), leader of the New York Senate Democrats, said in a 2018 statement. “More and more New Yorkers are understanding. losses caused by the criminalization of marijuana, the arrests and confessions of millions of our youth, and a thriving slum market. We must start by removing the dangers of this false policy, and that means moving forward with efforts to legalize common sense. ”

However, given the contradictory nature of the relationship, it is unclear when this wave of “common sense” legalization will occur.
